Neuland is an upper-case font designed by German type artist Rudolph Koch in the early 1900s. It was meant to be black and bold and squat and chunky however in this workshop we will explore many variations to liven up its dense appearance. Neuland can be combined with other calligraphy and handwritten styles. Make a greeting card and bookmark to take home with your instruction kit.

Learn how to make two styles of hand-stitched journals. They can be used as daily journals, mini photo albums, sketchbooks, and more. These two styles can be made in a variety of sizes to suit your needs. They can be embellished with collage, buttons or beads. One journal is folded and bound with the butterfly stitching method in the centre. The other is a Japanese ledger style bound on one side. We will paint the covers and prepare the text block (inside pages) then practice the stitching on a mock journal before assembling the final journals.

So, you’ve taken an introductory calligraphy workshop … now what? This time we will experiment with lettering on fabric and wood and designing hand made greeting cards with decorative papers.

In this slow-paced two session workshop, we’ll learn a contemporary pointed brush alphabet that’ll make your calligraphy more expressive. Expand your artistic repertoire with this versatile and fun lettering style, which we’ll explore using inspirational quotes and the Pentel Color Brush pen, watercolours, and gouache with a pointed paint brush.

In this workshop you will be introduced to the capitals (upper case) of a pointed pen lettering style based on Copperplate which originated in the 16th century but has recently become popular as a modern script (modern calligraphy). The thick and thin down strokes are achieved with a pressure and release method with the pen. We will first practice with soft pencils to build up the thick strokes then move on to using a pointed nib and ink. Your goal exercise will be to design a monogram (three or four initials of a name) that can be used on personalized cards or be transferred to fabric for an embroidery design.
