About
Kathy Guthrie is a mixed media artist based in Victoria BC. She has been practising art for over 30 years and her mediums of expertise include lettering arts, printmaking, collage and mixed media techniques.
Kathy Guthrie’s artworks emerge from processes of exploration and experimentation, taking the form of two-dimensional works on paper, mylar, and board, as well as installation work that incorporates photo transfer, objects, and lettering. Educated in graphic design and calligraphy, Kathy began her career as a lettering artist, and her work has since evolved to encompass a mixed media approach that includes collage, watercolour and acrylic painting techniques. Her sensitivity to textures and surfaces is evident in her work’s thin layers of soft paint application and washes of colour over arrangements of handmade papers, letters, and personal items, creating misty images that suggest the language of emotions and ambiguity of memory.
Her work has been shown widely in group exhibitions at many venues including the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Sooke Fine Arts Show, Victoria Arts Council Galleries, errant artSpace, 50/50 Gallery, arc.hive contemporary, Gallery 1580, Sidney Fine Arts Show, Burnaby Public Library, Annual TD Art Gallery Paint-In, Fernwood Art Stroll, and the Fairbank Calligraphy Society.
In recent years she has held solo exhibitions at errant ArtSpace (2019), Gallery 1580 (2014), and Ground Zero Printmakers Society Studio (2011), as well as at North Peace Gallery in Fort St. John BC (2017).
As a passionate participant in local art exhibitions for many years, Guthrie has received nine Juror’s Choice Awards from the Saanich Peninsula Arts & Crafts Society, and in 2009 was awarded the SPAC Member Scholarship.
In 2018 she was awarded the Victoria Arts Council Residency at DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel. She has also been a resident at Coast Collective Residency at Fort Rodd Hill (2012) and Artishow at Chateau Victoria (2011).
After early studies at the Sheridan College of Art + Design in Ontario, Guthrie pursued further training from institutions including Okanagan University College and the Alberta College of Art + Design. In 2009 she graduated with a Certificate of Visual Arts from the Vancouver Island School of Art.
She has also curated several exhibitions of other artists’ work, including “Current Threads” at Metchosin Art Gallery (2013), “Colour 3” at Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria (2010), and “Proof of Identification” at Slide Room Gallery (2009).
Kathy holds memberships with the Bow Valley Calligraphy & Lettering Artists Guild, the Fairbank Calligraphy Society, PRINT Victoria Print Society, the Victoria Arts Council, and The Friends of Calligraphy (San Francisco, CA).
